Most people use their credit cards to buy almost anything available in the market from food to garden tools to clothes. The credit card is also being used to pay things like gasoline and eating at the restaurant. This is due to the “BUY NOW PAY LATER” trend that makes buying things or paying for services more affordable. Avail of the service or have the item and then, pay for them after some time.

If you look at it, credit cards makes buying things or availing services cheaper than when paying for it using cash. It also makes things very convenient, as you won’t have to worry about not having enough money to pay for something on the spot.

Unfortunately, this “BUY NOW PAY LATER” scheme has caused many credit card holders to suffer large debts. People take the convenience given by the credit card for granted. Thus, people keep on buying things here and there, forgetting how much they’ll owe the credit card company when it is time to pay up.

So, how do we avoid this? Here are some tips to help you avoid having problem debts.

1) Plan your purchases properly– make sure you know what you need over a given period, e.g. one week. Good planning and budgeting of your needs helps you prioritize the things you have buy, when to buy them, and how much you’ll be buying.

2) Don’t overuse your credit card– don’t buy too much using the credit card just because you’ll pay for it at a later date. The credit card is best suited for buying something that you really need it now, yet it is quite expensive to pay for using cash.

3) Keep some cash around – the principle here is simple. If it is not practical to pay for this using the credit card, then I’ll just use my cash. It wouldn’t hurt to spend some dollars if you are paying for a few office supplies, or a few plates, trays, & kitchenware. Some companies charge extra fees for exceeding the maximum number of transactions allowed for your credit card. Just make sure that you still have enough cash for other out of pocket payments.

4) Take note of the card’s payment terms – always remember the interest rates, penalties, and payment periods involved when using your credit card. We wouldn’t want to buy too much now, then discover later on that we are going to pay for more than what we originally bought. Make sure you are capable of paying for what you are currently buying with your credit card.

5) When in debt, stop using your credit card – if you’ve lost track of your purchases using your credit card, or you really had to pay for something using your credit card, and it resulted in a debt, stop using your credit card to pay for more things. We cannot pay for a debt by creating another debt.

6) Change your credit card if it isn’t being financially helpful – your credit card should help you spend your money wisely. If you think that you are spending wisely, and you use the credit card only for emergency purposes or pre–determined situations, yet it is still difficult to pay for your card expenses, chances are your credit card isn’t the right one for you. You have to restructure your credit terms with the credit card company if it is possible. If not, change your credit card to the type that suits you.

The credit card can be a very helpful friend, or a worthless assistant, depending on how the cardholder uses it. Use it wisely, and you’ll be able to get things at a cheaper value. Use it poorly, and you’ll regret using your credit card.
